S/m Sheila Scott - A eulogy.

My mum
My mum was many things to many people and I am very proud to be able to stand here and talk about a few of them.
Firstly, my mum was a member of Henlow RNA and the Secretary of the branch for over 20 years. She was immensely proud to hold the position and passionate about the organisation, her fellow shipmates and what the RNA stood for - how many holidays did I have to re organise so that we didn’t miss a meeting! The huge turnout from the RNA and the British Legion is a legacy to how highly she was thought of. I would like to thank all the Standard Bearers for their contribution today - I am sure she is watching in awe. I would like to let you know that she is in her coffin wearing her uniform, unfortunately not standing to attention though.
Alongside her work in both the RNA and the British Legion she did other voluntary work including helping down Letchworth over 60’s and making tea at the Brotherhood Hall - for who she termed as ‘the elderly’ - the majority of which were younger than her!
My mum loved listening and dancing to music - this ranged from dancing during the war with my dad to big band music - her favourite being Glenn Miller to my husband’s rock band, Crop Circle. She was always described as their number one fan and loved coming along to their gigs and singing along - how many other 83 year olds know the words to songs like teenage kicks? Hopefully she will be up there dancing along with dad again now.
Mum loved doing her crosswords, puzzles and sudukos - to make sure she kept her brain active - this was obviously successful as she was sharper and quicker wined than anyone else I know.
Most of all were her love and pride in her family. She idolised her grandchildren, Lisa and Scoff and lavished them with time and love. Every time I look at them I see port of her in them - a look on their face or something they say. I guess you could say she spoilt them, if spoiling them with love counts. She had a special relationship with my husband Martyn and it was lovely to see them joking around with each other. I know this relationship made her very happy and she felt loved and cared about by all her family. Her love extended in recent years to include Donna, Janee and Jaye who became a big part of her life and who she looked on as part of her family. They know how special they were to her.
This year we had some special times in our caravan in Norfolk, our very own haven from the rest of the world. Mum loved being there and being near the sea - this was always a favourite place of hers.
But most of all this wonderful, vibrant, special, perfect lady was my own precious mum - and how lucky I am to have had her. She taught me how to love, to care for others, to feel loved, to make mistakes and learn from them and know it was ok to get things wrong, after all that is what helps us to learn. She was my friend, my confidant, the lady who taught me to knit! I danced with her, laughed with her and cried with her - she looked after me and made me who I am. When I said all this to a colleague on Friday he said and didn’t she do a good job’? - and do you know, I agree - she certainly did.
The world was a better place for having my mum in it - how lucky we were to have you and shared some of your specialness. Thank you mum for everything - I love you so much and I am going to miss you more than words can say. I know that my life will never be quite the same again - but rest in peace my precious lady.
